High Power Optics

High-power optics are components and materials that are engineered to endure elevated thermal loads and photon densities without incurring structural damage, surface degradation, or performance loss over time. Comparatively, general purpose optics may not be the best choice for experiments involving intense light sources, e.g. industrial lasers, that often result in scattering, coating damage, and long-term disrepair. Considering these factors, Newport has designed a put together a series of optical materials specially designed to accommodate higher energy outputs with low wavefront distortion, significantly increased laser-induced damage thresholds, and coating that reduces absorption and is stable under high temperatures.

Featured Products

Newport’s UV fused silica high-energy Nd:YAG laser mirrors are designed for maximum durability and safety in demanding applications. With laser damage thresholds up to 45 J/cm^2 at 1064 nm, they feature polished or ground back surfaces, preventing high energy laser light from escaping. High-reflectivity dielectric coatings along with UV fused silica substrate allow for low thermal expansion and absorption, ensuring that the mirrors are long-lasting and optimized for high-energy light sources.

Features:

  • High damage threshold of up to 45 J/cm2
  • RS>99.7%, RP>99% @ single or dual wavelengths
  • UV fused silica substrate for low thermal expansion and absorption
  • Polished back surface allows partial transmission to monitor light intensity
  • Ground back surface prevents high energy laser light to escape for improved safety

Newport’s nanostructure surface plano-convex lenses employ a high purity UV fused silica substrate that eliminates microscopic defect sites that could lead to laser damage. As a result, these lenses have high damage thresholds for pulsed or CW laser applications that are 2-5x higher than the standard thin films coating method. The nano-texture technology is etched into the surface of the lenses, exhibiting reflection losses down to 0.1% with no added heating and improved long-term stability.

Features:

  • High purity UV Fused Silica eliminates microscopic defect sites that could lead to laser damage
  • Reflection loss down to 0.1% due to nano-texture technology
  • High laser damage resistance for pulsed or CW applications
  • No surface absorption – reduced thermal lensing
  • Improved beam parameters and long term stability
