Beam Attenuator Using Polarization Setup
The Beam Attenuator Using Polarization setup is a modular, precision optical system designed to demonstrate polarization-based control of laser beam intensity. Using a polarizing beamsplitter and a rotatable polarizer the output intensity of the laser setup can be directly controlled. The linear polarizer mounted within the rotation mount will block the component of light that is orthogonal to its transmission axis and transmit light parallel to the transmission axis. Thus, the amount of light transmitted is described by Malus’ Law, the cornerstone of polarization optics, described by I=I0cos2θ, where I0 is the original intensity and θ is the angle between the polarization direction and the polarizer’s transmission axis. This setup enables dynamic attenuation of a laser beam without altering its path or coherence. It’s ideal for educational demonstrations, lab experiments, and optical system calibration.
