We partner with our OEM customers’ engineering staff to optimize solutions for performance, manufacturability, cost, and lead time. Drawing on Newport Corporation’s broad range of products, technologies and technical expertise enables peak results for all programs.

Optical Design

Optical Design

Our optical design staff has over 100 years of professional experience. We use a wide range of optical design software to ensure the optimal solution is achieved. Optical design programs include Zemax, FRED, Eikonal, TracePro, MatLab, and Code V. Beginning from optical concept definition and investigation design trade-offs, our engineers offer system-level predictions for Signal-to-Noise-Ratio, detailed optical design and comprehensive tolerance analysis. We employ multiple tolerancing techniques to ensure system performance including: standard sensitivity analysis, aberration-based sensitivities, and Monte Carlo based statistical predictions. Stray light evaluation is offered when required.

Optical Design

Spectral Analysis Design

Leveraging Newport’s extensive experience enabling spectral analysis solutions, we are able to layer in continuous wavelength analysis solutions utilizing our Richardson Gratings™ diffraction gratings portfolio and custom mastering & replication processes. Solutions include custom spectroscopy and monochromators delivering precise spectral wavelengths. Discrete wavelength analysis designs including optical filtering for excitation and emission paths of fluorescence microscopy systems, are best served by our ODiate™ and Stabilife® optical filter coating platforms.

Opto-mechanics Design

Opto-Mechanical Design

Our highly-skilled mechanical engineering staff utilizes Structural Thermal Optical Performance (STOP) analysis to incorporate stress, thermal and displacement output from traditional Finite Element Analysis (FEA) into the optical design model to accurately predict optical performance. Significant experience with ruggedization and miniaturization of optical assemblies and subsystems ensures optimal design in the most demanding applications.

Electronics Design

Electronics Design

Our capabilities include PCBA design, firmware, circuit simulation and analysis. Our electrical engineers have solved challenges including high-speed, low-noise detection systems, high-brightness LED and laser drivers and controllers, and closed-loop controllers for fast steering mirrors and voice coils. With the broad range of photonics measurement and analysis expertise across the company to draw upon, the optimal skill set for the specific electronic needs of our OEM customers’ programs is available.

System Design

System Design

Expertise at the system design level gained through development of solutions for medical instrumentation, analytical instrumentation, semiconductor wafer and photovoltaic processing systems supports our current sub-assembly, assembly and sub-system programs. Our experience includes high-power laser integration, multi-beam and multi-wavelength systems. We have solved system level challenges like reliability testing, field maintenance and serviceability considerations, fluidics, industrial design, computer-controlled parts handling, and PC/PLC motion controls.

Design for Manufacture

Design for Manufacture

All designs and products follow a rigorous design for manufacture protocol; whether our engagement is from the initial product design (build-to-specification) or our participation begins with value-engineering our OEM customers’ in-house design (build-to-print). Our design for manufacture approach targets high quality, reliability, consistency, and repeatability while optimizing manufacturing efficiency including cost, lead time, and cycle time.

Program Management

Program Management

Experienced and disciplined program management is vital to our success and our OEM customers’ success. We follow a detailed phase gate process for all new product introductions: design, prototype, pilot production, and volume manufacturing. Our project managers serve as a key point of contact for our OEM customers.

Advanced Manufacturing

Optical assembly solutions for demanding applications in the semiconductor capital equipment, medical instrumentation, industrial, aerospace, defense and security markets often require state-of-the-art manufacturing, assembly, alignment and metrology. Newport has invested in advanced manufacturing capabilities for lens assemblies, beam delivery systems, imaging systems, illumination systems, and spectral analysis systems. Our manufacturing approach is driven by Lean/6-Sigma methodologies for continuous improvement.

Precision Assembly

Precision Assembly

We deploy multiple assembly methods to achieve the required precision for the specific product. We are expert at ensuring optical performance is achieved and maintained throughout the product lifetime. For ultra-precision systems, we utilize cells and sub-cells diamond-turned to sub-micron accuracy to achieve minimum centration and tilt tolerance stack-up. We have mastered low mechanical stress mounting techniques incorporating unique mechanical designs and low shrinkage adhesives.

Precision Alignment

Precision Alignment

Sub-micron alignment precision is achieved using custom designed laser-based and interferometric alignment tools. Our expert assembly technicians are a key factor in achieving the demanding performance and sophisticated technical requirements for our OEM customers’ products. A broad range of alignment lasers and platforms fit the use wavelengths of our customers’ systems: 193nm, 257nm, 266nm, 355nm, 364nm, 532nm, 635nm.

Metrology and Test

Metrology and Test

Our ability to measure what we make has several positive effects for our customers. It ensures documented, traceable product performance that reduces integration time for customers’ system, lowers returned product rates, and lowers inventory costs. With at-use-wavelength interferometry available for DUV, UV, and visible systems as well as custom designed test fixtures, we replicate our customers’ application in our final test.

High End Scan Lens Design and OEM Manufacturing

High End Scan Lens Design and OEM Manufacturing

By strategically partnering early with our OEM customers to develop the perfect solution for your demanding applications, we design cutting edge scan lenses to meet high-quality standards for high power laser material processing requirements. Our designs take into consideration: optical aberrations, thermal lensing, absorption of materials, and damage threshold of the optical system. Our expertise ranges from the UV to IR, nanosecond to femtosecond pulsed lasers.

Manufacturing Facilities

Our manufacturing facilities include a variety of assembly and test environments to match the needs of our OEM customers’ product requirements. Our semiconductor wafer processing equipment customers require the most demanding environmental controls. Our Class 5 clean rooms in multiple locations employ extensive photo-contamination control protocols that have been developed over years of research and testing in cooperation with our OEM customers. We also have low-cost region operations to serve the needs of our customers across all markets. Component sourcing, fabrication, assembly and test in low cost regions provide a competitive cost basis and close proximity to our customers’ integration facilities.
